avatar review

English (U/A) Cast: Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Zoe Saldana Director: James Cameroon

US $500 million is huge and the epic sci-fi 3D product we get is equally breathtaking. ‘Avatar’ is perhaps the best in its genre, ever since Steven Spielberg’s ‘Jurassic Park’.

Here, we are, taken to the 22nd century where wheelchair-bound marine Jake Scully (Worthington) joins a group of corporate-backed scientists led by Dr Grace (Weaver) to convince the blue-skinned native population of a distant world called Pandora, to leave their beautiful home — an ancestral tree rooted above a huge deposit of a mineral called ‘Unobtainium’…

The Twilight Saga: New Moon

Saturday, December 12, 2009

By Robert L Sungte (Deccan Herald) English (U/A) Cast: Kristen Stewart , Robert Pattinson , Taylor Lautner Director: Chris Weit

new moon sagaA sequel to the mega-hit ‘Twilight’, the ‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon’ begins with Bella Swan’s (Kristen Stewart) 18th birthday party where she tells her vampire boyfriend Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) to transform her into his kind. But her 109-years-old-beau, stuck-in-a-17-year-old-boy’s body has no desire to suck out her blood and soul. So, the party becomes a turning point in the entire plot. Edward breaks up with Bella.

Separated by distance, Bella soon  begins to see why Edward did not grant her wish. But desperate and lonely she soon finds solace in a handsome hunk, Jacob Black (Lautner) who has his own werewolf secrets. As Bella’s life sinks deeper into a possessive relationship  she soon realises she’s standing on the cliff of danger. Now, all she needs is a savior and who is to come to her rescue and how is what keeps the plot of the film engrossing. The film is based on Stephenie Meyer’s second book on the ‘Twilight’ series and director Chris Weitz refined it as a modern day Romeo-Juliet story where you have action and melo-drama.

If we look ‘New Moon’ from ‘Twilight’, it is moody most of the time until Bella meets the warm and cheerful Jacob. The second half of the film is also slow with many show offs scenes. However, the eerie howlings and comical stunts save the good versus bad vampire saga. Another good news is that ‘New Moon’ is a ladies charmer. You have one of the sweetest hunks around trying to capture the heart of Bella. As Pattinson is out of the scene for a long period Lautner’s charm and biceps are much more noticeable.

The film ends in a sentimental note leaving the audience to conclude that they have to see the other two parts of the ‘Twilight’ books on the silver screen.

Airtel’s New Tariff Rates for Roaming… Is it the best for now?

Wednesday, November 25, 2009

[By Veena D’Souza for Nahai]

Airtel The telecom industry in India has become a stage for farces as one service provider starts slashing tariffs, its peers start leveraging cross product USPs to communicate value propositions in a desperate effort to gain maximum number of user while maintaining their current subscriber base. Considering the fact that Indians are among the most price sensitive consumers and ones who flow with emotions, the constantly evolving tariffs by operators today, promise a lot, but fall short on deliveries.

Touching different sects of consumers, newer tariffs are being offered to maintain the subscriber base and the only benefit that telecom operators today seek, are those for themselves. The local call rate differences are evident and have been clarified by certain parts of the media for whom it is crucial that the consumers know facts as they are.

The most recent announcement by Airtel launching the reduced tariff for Roaming charges falls short on many fronts. As a consumer, one is drawn to great savings at different levels – especially in the times of inflating lifestyle expenses. But a closer evaluation of the promise brings into light the actual cost differentiators.

The newest tariff by Airtel offers Roaming charges at 60p and 80p. Although Airtel reduced the roaming tariff, it is still on a per /minute pulse. A customer who has taken Airtel’s per second tariff will continue to pay 60p for incoming roaming and 80p for outgoing roaming calls on a per minute basis, while he/she enjoys 1p & 1.2p/sec for calls made within and outside Airtel’s network.

Roaming tariffs still remain high in the country barring Reliance and Tata DoCoMo, who have taken roaming to per second frontier.  Vodafone and Idea are yet to match such tariff cuts for roaming.

As a consumer who is aware, a comparison of various offering is the most obvious route to be taken. On doing so, it is clear that the tariffs offered by Reliance Mobile are extremely simple and easy to understand. Under their “Simply Reliance” plans they are offering customers 2 options – a 1p/sec tariff and a flat charge of 50p/min. Both plans offer consumers the benefits of a ‘no-frills’ charge – everything is either at 1p/sec or at 50p/min; and they have not secluded Roaming from their array of offerings. It is truly a simple plan. Tata DoCoMo’s plans also have the same theme of a flat rate of 1paise per second. But, is only suited for callers with short duration calls. Unlike Reliance, Tata DoCoMo does not offer per minute and per call tariffs to satiate the needs of those who talk for longer durations, to whom the per second tariffs of Tata DoCoMo will prove to be prohibitively expensive!

By coming in late with the Tariffs on roaming, one would have expected Airtel to come about with the best offer, since its competitors have already played their cards; but it is clearly not in their agenda to offer 1p/sec for Roaming customers. As is mentioned in their billboards – Freedom and Advantage – one may question where the two important factors vanish when it comes to roaming. After making loud announcements of the per second billing which has covered endless reams of new print and television commercials, consumers are still going to be charged on the per/min basis for Roaming and that too more than other operators in the country. One may ask why this discrimination?

A Christmas Carol

Saturday, November 21, 2009

Onto redemption: A scene from ‘A Christmas Carol’. True to the original Charles Dicken’s classic ‘A Christmas Carol’, this animation film follows the transformation of an old miser and money lender Ebenezer Scrooge (Jim Carey) into a kind and loving person.

After his closest friend and business partner Marley passes away, Scrooge always complains about life. He is also unpopular with the people around him. He not only burdens his clerk Bob (Gary Oldman) with his endless criticisms but refuses to have dinner with his nephew Fred (Colin Firth).  But, one night Marley’s ghost appears to give him a chance to change his life. Thereafter, Scrooge is visited by three spirits — the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet to Come (all voiced by Carey). These ghosts take Scrooge to the different stages of life he has had, and also to the future. And, with Director Robert Zemeckis, has who always been a pathbreaker in animation film industry, in control, the film narrates the timeless classic like a flowing river unobstructed by silts and stones.

The 3D image looks fantastic with the each settings having unique aura of the time. Details like pimples, coins on a death man’s forehead, etc., are some of the minute details which the film can also boast about.

Facial movements and voices of the characters also resemble the actors in real life. Carey’s flexible face is clearly reflected in all the characters he lends his voice to. Carey brings back memories of him jiggling, singing, sliding down a railing in mega-hit ‘The Mask’. Oldman and Firth also lend good support.

However, it is important to remember that despite the ‘A Christmas Carol’  being a children’s classic, it basically is a ghost story. As such the film has some scary scenes which are well enacted to keep you on the edge of your seat. There are ghostly images which might haunt children for days.

Overall, the film is a big morale booster in this period of gloom in the markets. There are not many funny lines, but it will cheer you up with its faith on hope, redemption and love.

2012 review English (U/A)

Cast: John Cusack , Amanda Peet, Chiwetel Ejiofor Director: Roland Emmerich

The year 2012 is doomsyear. With the sun heating up the Earth’s core there are sudden and massive earthquakes and tsunamis around the world. In the meantime, we have few people building the ‘ark’ somewhere in the Tibetan Himalayas to save mankind. As usual, there is the dark side to this project – the berths have been bought by the world’s richest and the VVIPs.

Prior to the catastrophe, somewhere in the United States, we have scientist Adrian Helmsley (Ejiofor) fighting against corruption. But the center of focus soon shifts to Los Angeles-based writer Jackson Curtis (Cusack) who tries to rescue his ex-wife (Peet) and their two kids – to get them to Tibet.

‘2012’ as a disaster film is huge and there are plenty of awesome scenes with refined special effects. When we look at it from the technical angle, there has never been such a splendid disaster movie since ‘Independence Day’.

Leaving aside the preachy dialogue and tons of routine remarks, this film certainly catches the eye with its equally mega-star cast. On the dark side, ‘2012’ lacks the punch to knock up your emotion and intelligence leaving you with no clear idea over the entire concept of doomsday.

However, the film’s strength lies in its massive explosion scenes. They make doomsday look like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity which one should never miss

Cherly Cole shows the right way

Cherly Cole on the set of X-Factor Girls Aloud Walking the ramp

On Sept 21, 2009 Girls Aloud star and X-Factor judge Cheryl Cole insists she’ll never pose nude — because she’s far too classy!

x-factor-1-1910 She thinks naked photo shoots are tacky.

“There’s nothing tasteful about some fruit covering your bits!” she said.

“Sometimes a beautiful dress is much more sexy than underwear. Have some class.”

Cole, 25, also admits she isn’t against plastic surgery — but insists she wouldn’t choose to go under the knife as she thinks it’s “sexy” to have imperfections.

“I’ve got nothing against it,” she said. “If someone hasn’t got boobs and having them done is going to make them a happier, more confident person, then go for it.

“I wouldn’t deny it if I had plastic surgery. I wouldn’t just come out with bog boobs and say, ‘No, I haven’t had an operation!’ I think imperfections are sexy anyway, I honestly do.

“If everyone looked perfect with a perfect face and perfect boobs, it wouldn’t be sexy as it’s not real life.”

The Rebound

rebound By Robert L Sungte

English (A)

Cast: Catherine Zeta-Jones, Justin Bartha

Director: Bart Freundlich

Catherine Zeta-Jones plays Sandy, a smart 40-year-old mother of two, trying to recover from a broken marriage. Sandy leaves for New York to work in a sports television network. However, her new job forces her to hire a nanny to look after her kids, and she chooses 25-year-old Aram (Bartha) who works as cafe boy near her apartment.

As the film rolls by, we get to know that Aram is also a divorcee who is yet to figure out what he wants to do with his life. Soon, he gets attached to Sandy and the kids. Everything goes smoothly until the unlikely couple calculate their age.

This romcom is more of a romantic film and not much of a comedy. The kids are used to generate crude adult humour. The gags are simply not striking enough to help the audience decide whether they should laugh or just pull a face. Except for Aram’s reluctant parents and the confrontation with Sandy’s ex-husband, there is little to grip the attention. The over simplification of Sandy and Aram’s relationship is simply to bring forth the realisation that they are on the rebound track from their previous breakups. A more risky twist could have been more engaging.

Zeta-Jones stands firmly on her heels but can’t beat herself in her last film ‘No Reservation’. Bartha (of ‘The Hangover’ ) is also not convincing as the young man with noble deeds. Visually, the film is sharp and unknown characters appear just as in the normal day to day life bringing a sense of realness.

‘The Rebound’ is fresh, yet it stinks too quickly to enjoy the flavour.

Shahtrughan Sinha’s new look

Saturday, November 7, 2009

shotgun shotgun 1 For the first time in 36 years, Shatrughan Sinha has shed his moustache in Ram Gopal Verma's upcoming flick 'Rakta Charitra’.

What do you think of his new look? To me, seeing ‘The Tiger of Bihar’ without his trademark moustache is like a looking at a hyena in a sheep’s skin. :) He looked like a kind hearted and charming person, after all these years, especially in the first photo.

'Rakta Charitra’ is said to be a biopic based on the life of the alleged outlaw Paritala Ravi and Shatrughan essays a pivotal role based on superstar-turned-politician N.T. Rama Rao, former Andhra Pradesh chief minister.

Actor Vivek Oberoi plays the lead in the movie and he will sport a moustache unlike in his real life.

Michael jackson's This Is It

Saturday, October 31, 2009

[Robert L Sungte]
Deccan Herald
English (U)
Cast: Michael Jackson
Director: Kenny Ortega
That the late ‘king of pop’ Michael Jackson still does capture the hearts of billions was clearly evident from the rapturous response of fans who thronged to see ‘Michael Jackson’s This Is It’.

Directed by ‘High School Musical’ director Kenny Ortega, the 100-plus minute take on Michael’s preparation for his last and never 50-show London tour is surprisingly compelling despite media pundits’ talk of its producer wanting to mint easy money. The film shows Michael’s preparations which were mostly on-stage between the months of March and June 2009. The documentary features Michael practising many of his hit numbers.

Opinions are divided among fans on whether this film should be made at all. Some say it is homage to the king of pop with ‘Michael, We love you. But we also love money’, tag attached to it.

On the other hand some fans were heard saying, ‘This is it. A perfect way to finally rest the king’.

Michael does look a bit frail in the first few minutes of film. The video shots that were part of a documentary for behind-the-scenes of the proposed tour speak for themselves on his health and mentality. He appears to be mentally prepared but his physical movements give away the nature of his health. However, he still had ‘that thing’ in him that gave him the face of a glorious star who moved and shaked the world wherever he went.

Perfect for Killing Time

Monday, October 26, 2009

[Robert L.Sungte ]

Mario Cleri may be an unfamiliar name to classic suspense thriller fans, but Mario Puzo would need no introduction.

Six Graves To Munich
Mario Puzo
Quercus,2009,
pp 256, Rs 399

This book Six Graves to Munich is, in fact, written by the very man who gave us The Godfather, and other great works of crime stories related to the mafiadom. Puzo’s typical style is visible throughout in this cat-and-mouse revenge thriller. The only difference is that Puzo, back in 1967, had written this book under a pseudonym.

Six Graves To Munich is set in post World War II. It fundamentally revolves around a man’s endless resolve and lustful thirst to have his revenge — a call he must fulfill for clearing the haunting memories of torture his tormentors had inflicted on him and his family.

Michael Rogan, then a young and intelligent American secret service agent with his wife, was ruthlessly tormented by Nazi officers and left to die, but he somehow escaped, alive. In order to avenge his wife and his own never failing memory he tracks down seven of his tormentors after the war ended. All the former Nazi officers have taken up new professions and some of them are now protected by the law as they have risen up to respectable positions. Rogan himself is also a successful businessman now, but he never fails to update himself with the lives of his hit list. Ultimately Rogan tracks down all of them and then kills them one by one.

Though Six Graves To Munich is a story with a predictable climax, the emotional narratives pouring out from Puzo about his characters are intense and the desperation in them to have their ways are good enough to keep the pages turning. One simply couldn’t get enough of the twists and turns. The straightforward plot flows like a stream unhindered by unnecessary ‘dams’ and self-indulgence.

Published a year before he completed The Godfather, Six Graves To Munich is definitely a bestseller and a reader’s delight. It comes with all the ingredients of Puzo’s books. The descriptive brutality scenes and cruising around Europe certainly appeal to readers who would love thrilling exercises. The details are vividly gruesome.

The love angle Puzo inserts into the revengeful man’s life also makes Six Graves To Munich relying on the old machination to keep a certain section of Mills and Boon readers glued to the book. However, Rosalie’s life is also a story of struggle and she rightly encourages Rogan to fulfill the task he set out for. Puzo gives her such a life that we can’t blame her for being such a cold-hearted woman. The setting is well cemented in this sense.

Puzo is no more, but this book brings him back from the cold graves to entertain his fans with such a simplistic yet engrossing chronicle. Six Graves to Munich is the kind of book you would like to finish in one go. It is light reading and perfect for killing time.

“... Rogan shook his head and fumbled with his wallet. He spread a sheaf of bills on the bed and said, “I am buying you for the night. Pull down your shade.” Isn’t that inviting enough?

Kylie On Windows 7 promo Campaign

For the first time Microsoft has done what its competitors have failed to do. It has roped in the service of cute little Kylie to promote their latest product Windows 7. I think this kind of promotion or publicity move is 100 % correct from the marketing point of view.

G-Force

English (U)
Cast: Sam Rockwell, Penelope Cruz, Tracy Morgan, Nicolas Cage, Will Arnett, Bill Nighy
Director: Hoyt Yeatman

A scene from the film ‘G- Force’.The FBI is not convinced about the field operational capabilities of ‘G-Force’  unit – a secret team of three genetically-engineered guinea pigs and a mole.

However, Darwin (voiced by Rockwell) leads Juarez (Cruz), Blaster (Morgan), and tech-wiz Speckles (Cage) to get their due recognition as one of the best US secret service teams when they find out that electronics giant chief executive officer Saber (Nighy) is planning to control consumers by activating a secret chip secretly placed in the company’s appliances over the years.

Walt Disney Pictures’ ‘G-Force’ is perfect for younger children in the age group of 4-12 years.

The plot is simple, animation seamless even in the 2-D format and it has a riotous script which is voiced by a talented cast.

As the film is very clear about its target audience – younger kids – trying to convince young adults or teens to watch this film can be a bit embarrassing since most have seen animals talking and doing gravity-defying stunts and so forth.

But for kids, talking guinea pigs doing James Bond stunts, fartings, sliding down a pipe etc., can be very funny. The tricks employed are simple and predictable, yet they are time-tested to bring smiles on the faces of kids.

‘G-Force’ is a wholesome family entertainer and parents can proudly take their children to watch it without having any second thought.

Main Aurr Mrs Khanna

Saturday, October 17, 2009

[Robert L Sungte]
Deccan Herald
Hindi (U/A)
Cast: Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Sohail Khan, Preity Zinta, Bappi Lahiri
Director: Prem Soni

Debutant director Prem Soni’s ‘Main Aurr Mrs Khanna’ is about a married Indian couple in Melbourne trying to fix their relationship hit by financial insecurity of the husband, Samir (Salman). Samir moves to Singapore for a job and tells wife Raina (Kareena) to return to Delhi. However, Raina refuses and with the help of her new- found friends gets a job at the Melbourne airport where she soon becomes the dreamgirl of cafe-boy Aakash (Sohail Khan).

Post intermission: Samir gets a job, returns to claim his wife but finds himself in a threesome love story, as Mrs Khanna has signed a dummy marriage document with Aakash.

The first half moves at a snail’s pace leaving you all the time to admire the boots, jackets and eyelashes of the actors. The second half is no better, save for a few funny lines.

The plot is even weaker. It needs the helping hand of Dino Morea, Preity Zinta and Deepika Padukone. Blame it on the ridiculously updated script Govinda didn’t make it to support Salman. Kareena is also bombastically awful. Salman has to share the burden of lifting the film with brother Sohail but supporting actor Yash Tonk seems better than the Khans and Bhappi Lahiri in the full glory of his gold chains.

Can you find any logical reason for a woman who still manages to get the best of clothes and lipsticks when her relationship is falling apart? For fans, the only savior of ‘Main Aurr Mrs Khanna’ is Salman’s reliable biceps. A dumb movie not worth the ticket price.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona

Saturday, October 10, 2009

[Robert L Sungte, Deccan Herald]

English (U/A)
Cast: Penelope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson, Javier Bardem
Director: Woody Allen

Best friends Vicky (Hall) and Cristina (Johansson) are poles apart when it comes to love. Vicky believes she knows what she wants and is doing research on Catalan even as she prepares for her wedding to the man of her dreams Doug (Messina). And Cristina is not sure of what to do after making a 12-minute film. She tries her hand in photography.

But the two friends have one thing in common – they are smitten and seduced by a just-divorced Spanish artist Juan Antonio (Bardem) when on holiday in Barcelona.
Antonio sleeps with both women but he still has a soft corner for his wild and beautiful ex-wife Maria (Cruz). Vicky turns cautious of Antonio, while Cristina follows him to his house. But when Antonio takes Maria in again after she tries to kill herself and after a brief spell of three-some lovemaking, the room begins to turn smaller.

This complicated and high-risk experiment on finding the perfect element in love is certainly one of the best from director Woody Allen’s genre of film-making. Classic film editing styles of fade-ins and fade-outs are incorporated with an appropriately timed voiceover narration.
The film is a witty take on love, lust, and marriage in sunny Barcelona. The stars are beautiful and their performances are naturally good enough for Allen and young adults. Johansson is sweetly innocent while Cruz turns impeccably hot to be forgotten.

‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’ is definitely an intelligent film based on the continuous process of learning how to be ‘in love’ and not ‘out of love’.

Surrogates (Film Review)

Robert L Sungte, Deccan Herald

English(A)
Cast: Bruce Willis, James Cromwell , Ving Rhames
Director: Jonathan Mostow
This sci-fi film is about the dangerous trend of impersonal relationship ushered in by technology. People don’t interact in normal day-to-day activities anymore. They are brainwashed by companies to use their exact look-alike surrogates to maintain their public life while they sit at home.

However, when surrogate creator Dr Lionel Canter’s (Cromwell) son is murdered, things take a new turn. FBI agent Tom Greer (Willis) and his partner are ordered to probe the case. The two agents also use their ‘surries’ to track down the killer but when Tom’s surry is destroyed, the real ‘him’ is forced to venture out of his home to the streets.
The general theme is a fight against surrogate technology led by ‘The Prophet’ (Rhames) and to free humans from its clutches. Using a graphically greenish set-up, director Jonathan Mostow tries hard to bring forth man’s blind acceptance of machines and its dangers. There are some brilliant action sequences in addition to the artistic impression of the surrogate of Bruce Willis’ look.

However, the film lacks a tight plot and twists become predictable after the first half. There are also many rooms that need a little more attention. For instance, the reason behind Tom’s failing relationship with his wife after the death of their son is sapless.

The motivational message that humans need direct and personal relationship is perhaps the only reason that drives this soulless and shallow take on human dependency on technology.

Inglorious Basterds

Saturday, October 3, 2009

[Source: Deccan Herald]

English (A)

Cast: Brad Pitt, Melanie Laurent, Christoph Waltz, Diana Kruger
Director: Quentin Tarantino

Set in the historic year of 1944 when the Second World War was at its final phase, Tarantino’s ‘Inglorious Basterds’ is a classy take on two plots revolving around the attempt to bring down leaders of the Third Reich.

First a band of Jewish American soldiers, ‘the Basterds,’ led by their valiant leader Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) carries out surgical strikes against Nazi troops in France. In the meantime, a lady Jew theatre owner (Melanie Laurent), is approached by a German soldier and actor (Daniel Bruhl) to host the premiere of his propaganda film in Paris. The plot then brings ‘the Basterds’, the Jew lady who is seeking her revenge and the German high command including Hitler under the roof of a theatre for the final showdown.

Far from reality, the film takes larger than life twists with its bizarre and bloody scenes. It is natural for many reviewers to get excited at the mention of Tarantino and his film but those people who have branded the film as “simply hilarious” and “brilliantly striking” are just exaggerating about this rather over-indulgent exercise. The class in movie-making remains intact but at the expense of substance.

Pitt is comparatively good as a fearless strike unit team leader. However, standing taller is Christoph Walltz as SS officer Col Hans Landa. Walltz has the look of a jackal under a sheep’s skin.

However, many Tarantino fans will be disappointed for there is not much morality involved. Ardent followers can expect a toned down version of ‘Pulp Fiction’. Over all, the film could either turn into one of the most boring film from Tarantino’s stable or it could be simply awesome for people enjoying his kind-of-movies.

UP (3D film review)

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

English (U)
Cast: Ed Asner, Christopher Plummer, Jordan Nagai
Director: Pete Docter

It’s been a while since we saw ‘U’ rating in recently released animation films. With Pixar’s latest installment ‘Up’ we are introduced to a children-friendly adventure involving a 80-year-old plus Carl Fredricksen (Asner) and a young boy Russell (Nagai).

Carl Fredricksen and his wife Ellie have dreamt of exploring the exotic Paradise Falls in South America since their childhood.

This place has been described by world renowned explorer Charles Muntz (Christopher Plummer) as the most beautiful place on earth.

However, life has other things in store for the couple. Ellie dies but Carl keeps the dream alive and one day, thinking he is alone in the house, attaches hundreds of balloons to the chimney of his house and sets off towards Paradise Falls only to find a young explorer Russell in his flying house.

Seeing Russell’s enthusiasm Carl takes him along and that’s when the adventure begins with the birds and talking dogs besides a villain.

The film’s plot is simple, yet heart-rending with a sense of loneliness permeating after a happy, long-married couple are parted.
But the story also goes to show how a man can once again see the rainbow after the rain.
The character Russell is particularly sweet and funny. Children will love him for his enthusiastic facial expressions and guts.

Most of Pixar’s films bear marks of success, and this time too, the guys have come up with a film that reflects true family values besides reflecting on the comradeship between the old and the young in this superb visual picturisation.

The Ugly Truth (Review)

English(A)
Cast: Gerard Butler ,Katherine Heigl, Eric Winter
Director: Robert Luketic

The film’s predictable plot also has the most sexual references among the recently released romcom films with scenes involving the use of F and B words and sexist dry remarks. With so many vulgar expressions young couples may find it titillating to some extent. If you don’t mind a sincerely devilish, talk dirty and above all stereotypical movie The Ugly Truth might be just for you...

However, the story gets murkier when he realises that his ex-fiancee Baroness (Sienna Miller) is on the other side of the law. Miller can hardly build up the requisite emotions...

‘Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince’ is basically a showcase of director David Yates’ work. However, Potter fans need to realise by now that there are bound to be omissions and additions.

26/11: Attack on Mumbai review

Tuesday, July 14, 2009

Behind the veil of gloom
Deccan Herald

Looking back at the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai is like putting your fingers back into the fire.

It hurts even more because the compassionate stories and thought-provoking commentaries that come up in the aftermath of the bloody event did not serve much purpose. 26/11: The Attack on Mumbai traces the attacks on India’s financial capital as it unfolded in a series of stories from ‘The Hindustan Times’ reporters and some exclusive articles by well known writers and journalists.

Browsing through the book, one could get the glimpse of those trapped inside the Taj, the Oberoi and also the men involved in the rescue operations. It brings forth the emotive human spirit and also why Mumbai city got back to its feet as soon as it was brought down on its knees.

The book also covers the immediate political fallout — the higher middle class angst against politicians and how soon it cooled down; change in Pakistan’s stance — that country for the first time admitted that its citizens were involved in the terror attacks against India. Behind the veil of gloom, 26/11 also presents some amusing stories on politicians and wannabe superstars among India’s top security officials.

Some might feel it’s like re-reading ‘dead’ newspaper reports. That’s where you could get bored. There are also few factual errors which could have been avoided. Otherwise, 26/11 presents a diverse view of the event — from inside and outside, top and below — to let you to draw your own conclusions as to why such a dastardly act could happen. Among the many commentaries, the closing piece, ‘Terrorist’ by noted film director Mahesh Bhatt, leaves a lasting impact on the reader’s mind as he presses the need for redemption through his talks with a terrorist.

Ice Age as a franchise is a big name and its latest series Dawn of the Dinosaurs lived upto its reputation, but a lesser....

The film is now much more adult oriented, many of the ‘funny lines’ would be unintelligible to children. On the whole, Ice Age 3 is no longer very cool, but just cool with few laugh spots here and there.

Review by RLS
English(U/A)

If it was not for director McG’s expert hand of assembling the messy script and settings, besides the injection of a few surprises here and there, the film would have been a total waste. ‘Terminator Salvation: The End Begins’ should spell the end of the epic battle between machines and mankind once and for all...
